Questions about painting and home repair
Does a painter or handyman need a license in California?
California needs a contractor's license for jobs of $1,000 or more, counting labor and materials, and for smaller jobs that need a building permit or use hired workers. Licensed California contractors show their CSLB license number on their listings; sellers without a license say “Not a licensed contractor”. You can look up any license number at cslb.ca.gov.
Hourly or a set price?
Both are common. For small fixes an hourly rate is often simpler. For painting a room or a house, ask for a set price that says how many coats and who buys the paint.
Do I pay a fee to hire someone here?
No. Customers never pay Contract fees. Sellers pay $5 per listing, which helps keep scammers off the site. The price on the listing is set by the seller.
How do I pay for the work?
Paying in the app is coming soon. For now, you and the seller agree how to pay. Meet in a public place and check the work before you pay. Never pay with gift cards or wire transfers.
